Are you the master of yourself?

Or are you a victim of circumstances? Do you own your identity, or is your persona a non-free (always trying to adjust) homo digitalis? What we do, do we do it for ourselves or for glory? Are we really having fun? Fads come and go, and we get caught in the midst of various trends and superficiality. We listen to experts on how to live «properly» and what is right for us and what is not. And to achieve success in this modern life, we end up being miserable. And why is that? The answer is not an easy one. The world has managed to become extremely complex to «digest.» Information overload is flowing endlessly, fogging our clear thinking. Even the movement of minimalism demands from us to invest a certain amount of money in order to «discard» the unnecessary and make it to the Valhalla of «simplicity».

When was the last time that we played a board game with our family? .. a walk in nature..or doing nothing, like staring at the ceiling. We all stare at screens all day for a number of reasons. Many do this for work. Others just for the sake of habit. And in many cases, the ones working on screens, when they finish working, start checking their phones to see how the «social life» on the web goes. Can we really sit our bodies down and reflect? Are we able to perform hard mental tasks anymore? Or have we become the masters of «easy»?

Are we enjoying our freedom? Do we feel grateful for the democracy in which we “thrive”? Are we really thriving? Could we handle a life with fewer possessions? Is this comfortable lifestyle making us “softer”, so therefore subjective to more stress and frustration? These are hard questions to which only philosophy could give some answers. A trick -though- that we can implement in mastering our thoughts is to be present in the moment and to breathe.. Life is not linear. We need to be adjustable. Aware and grateful.
